Fire and Water Features: Choosing Elemental Focal Points
June 16, 2026 · 6 min read

Elemental features are what people notice first and photograph most. They are also plumbing and gas work, so they belong in the plan early — retrofitting means opening the deck.
Water features by effect
Sheer descents deliver a wide silent sheet and need generous flow. Scuppers give a spouted arc from a raised wall. Deck bubblers work on shallow entry steps and read best in pairs or threes.
- Sheer descent: 12–18 GPM per foot of width
- Scupper: 15–25 GPM each
- Bubbler: 10–20 GPM each
Give features their own valve
Run features on a dedicated valve or booster pump so you can shut them off without changing filtration flow. Shared plumbing means choosing between clear water and a working waterfall.
Fire features
Natural gas needs a supply line sized for total BTU load; propane needs tank access and a regulator. Electronic ignition adds cost but removes the match. Keep 24 inches of clearance from seating and any combustible surface.
